'VICIOUS TIGHT'
'Hey, want to bid 7 spots for a regional Colorado group of automotive dealerships?'
Typically we'd say 'Thank you very much, we just have to get something from our
car' and then drive away fast as hell. But this campaign was different.
The client was Stevinson Automotive and their agency was TDA Advertising and
Design in Boulder. We've worked with Thomas Dooley and Jonathan Schoenberg
from TDA for years and it's always a pleasure. This time was no exception. The
scripts were tight and a few of them called for the dealership's head, Kent Stevinson,
to be on-camera talent.
Usually that's like a marketing director saying "my nephew loves graphic design -
he can make our logo for us' or it conjures up images of screaming salesman-
turned-owners railing against bluescreen, but the team at TDA did an exceptional
job of turning the genre on its head. And Kent is a lovely man and has a real talent
for playing the straight man (not an easy gig).
For a campaign of 7 spots we used 3 different DPs - James Gardner, Barry Parrell,
and Joe Baran.
At one point I asked our first DP (James) to use a longer lens so the shot would be
tighter and the rack focus more pronounced. He turned to me and said "Oh, so you
want it vicious tight?' And I think that phrase will probably be my favorite thing to say
to DPs forever.
'No, fuck, I want it vicious tight.'
And I would never refer to a DP as 'fuck,' but it was funny in that last line.
