Argentina and the international language of Wi-Fi
There is nothing like a best friend living in Argentina for a few months to give one an excuse to get outta dodge and experience a new culture.
Beyond the rumors of great steaks, superb wine, and of course baila, baila, baila (dance, dance, dance), I was pretty much a blank slate of expectation when I landed.
And being that I have indulged in all of those elements and more for the last 10 days I present to you a few notable observations:
tango is the new black
if anyone is lacking a little luster in their life PLEASE look up your local tango dancing constituency. It is a moving metaphor for life.
making out in parks is a lost art
granted, no one moves out of their house before they are married and therefore a park is a much better choice than in the living room with your mom, BUT if this place doesn't encourage you to take a reprieve from the grind with the object of your affection, I don't know what will.
the international language of Wi-Fi
and here is where I will go a little more in depth, since this is an industry blog. Equivalent to tango dancing and making out in parks, Wi-Fi is nothing new. What I am waking up to is HOW it affects my life on an experiential level. I can be so far away from home, but so close due to a combination of that centralized global computer in the sky and the invisible roads that allow us to access anything anytime. On a high level, I believe we are in the midst of the Integration Era, just like in the past we went through the Renaissance Era or Industrialization. As a pitiful example, I was in a café watching some spontaneous salsa dancing and video-chatted my girls at home so they could see how it goes down in a café on an idle Wednesday. Or when I shared this crazy music video I saw back in the states with some new Argentinian.friends. Sharing cultural discoveries caught on video is a far cry from actual travel, but it is really cool that it is even an option. Bottom line, technology is quickening the integration of culture, products and content at a rate that exceeds our practical understanding. This is the first time in history that a global audience is readily reached, and it excites me to create content for a global audience. Content that appeals to the human race, not necessarily just one particular race (I just burnt some incense after writing that line). Sure there will be barriers in terms of ease of use, etc. I mean my friend who I am staying with can't get the CW's "Gossip Girl" in Argentina, which I feel is for her own good, but I understand the abstract frustration. And even with all the barriers on-demand content will encounter, the prospect of creating programming for a global audience is one that excites me greatly. Just some musings between my dates with the dance floor and the park bench. ;-)
