REHAB PRESENTS DAFT PUNK'S ELECTROMA
Monday, 8/08 - Mezzanine, San Francisco CA
My head still pounding, my ears still ringing… That was the effect I got from my first
assignment. As the newest addition to the crew, my mission was to encounter the
latest cinematic installment that Rehab and the SF360 Film Club presented at Mez-
zanine. This month: Daft Punk’s “Electroma”, a short film about two robots in search
of finding identity through humanity.
Though I was able walk through the entrance unhindered, others were left with less
fortunate luck. Scores of scenesters, hipsters and electro-junkies gathered along the
Jessie St. alleyway, anxiously waiting to get in so they could witness the duo’s latest
work. Upon entry, dozens, including myself, scrambled as if playing musical chairs to
find a place to sit amongst the limited seating. Lucky enough to grab a seat, but un-
lucky enough to sit in the far right corner of the front row, I watched as the two robots
climb toward their dream of becoming human, and fall at the hands of the sun and their
robotic society. All while sitting directly in front of the eight-foot speaker. ‘What’d you
say???’
After the film ended, the partying began. Many stayed and partied like it was 3099, dow-
ning spirits provided by Chartreuse, and jamming to funky electro-beat performances by
the Bang Gang DJs, Riot in Belgium, Jefrodisiac + Richie Panic, and Dandi Wind. I was
trying to be humble and not get too crazy, but after the DJs threw on some Soulwax, I
had to let my inhibitions go. Needless to say, it was a great first night as a Rehabber.
Oh, and to the white loafer wearin’, shaggy-haired guy who so ballsy serenaded himself
in the corner of the stage as if he was the last man on Earth, rock on.
